Safeguarding life, property and the environment.
Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas has its’ roots in 1864 when Det Norske Veritas was founded in Oslo as a membership organization with the purpose of providing “reliable and uniform classification and taxation of Norwegian ships”. Being incorporated as a Norwegian foundation (“stiftelse”) in 1978 a new purpose developed in the statutes; “Safeguard life, property and the environment”. Following the merger between DNV and GL in 2013 the role of Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas changed from an operational entity into a holding company. However the purpose of Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas remains “Safeguard life, property and the environment”, and Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas is today mainly achieving its purpose through its majority ownership of the DNV GL group.
